Common Questions

Is cannabis legal in the UK?+

Medical cannabis has been legal in the UK since November 2018 (rescheduled to Schedule 2). You need a prescription from a specialist doctor. Recreational cannabis is still Class B — possession can get you up to 5 years, supply up to 14 years. BUT if you're self-medicating for a genuine condition, you may well qualify for a legal prescription. That's what Cannabin-Oid is here to help with.

What's a terpene and why should I care?+

Terpenes are the aromatic compounds that give cannabis (and all plants) their smell and flavour. But they do WAY more than that. Myrcene makes you sleepy. Limonene lifts your mood. Caryophyllene reduces inflammation (it's literally a CB2 receptor agonist). The "entourage effect" means terpenes and cannabinoids work together — the whole plant is more than the sum of its parts. When people say "this strain hits different," they're talking about the terpene profile whether they know it or not.

Will my GP find out if I get prescribed?+

Most private cannabis clinics will ask for your GP Summary Care Record as part of the consultation. Some clinics notify your GP, some don't by default but recommend it. You can discuss this with your prescriber. Many patients do tell their GP and find them surprisingly supportive — especially when you frame it as moving from self-medication to legitimate treatment. Your GP cannot override your private prescription.

Can I drive while prescribed cannabis?+

Legally, prescribed cannabis patients have a "statutory medical defence" under the Drug Driving Act 2015 — meaning you won't automatically fail a drug-drive test. HOWEVER, you must not be impaired while driving. If an officer believes you're impaired, you can still be prosecuted. Practically: don't drive while medicated. Wait until the effects have fully worn off. Keep your prescription evidence in the car. Many patients medicate in the evening and drive fine the next day.

Indica vs sativa — what's the real difference?+

Here's the secret: the indica/sativa distinction is mostly about plant shape (short and bushy vs tall and lanky), not effects. What actually determines how a strain affects you is its terpene and cannabinoid profile. A high-myrcene strain will be sedating regardless of whether it's labelled "indica" or "sativa". A high-limonene strain will be uplifting. Modern cannabis science focuses on chemotypes (chemical profiles) rather than the old indica/sativa labels. That said, the labels are still useful as rough guides — just know the real story is in the terps.

How do I know if my stuff is laced or contaminated?+

Warning signs: chemical/metallic taste, unusually strong effects from a small amount, effects that feel "wrong" or synthetic, uniform appearance lacking natural variation, strange texture. If you suspect synthetic cannabinoids (Spice/K2) — BIN IT. They're genuinely dangerous and have killed people. Other contamination: white fuzzy patches (mold), overly dense buds with no trichomes (PGR), gritty texture (silica/glass). This is the #1 reason to get prescribed — lab-tested, pharmacy-dispensed medicine means you know exactly what you're getting.

How much does getting prescribed cost?+

Initial consultation: typically 49-150 quid depending on the clinic. Follow-ups: 49-80 quid. Medication: 150-350 per month depending on your prescription. Prescription/dispensing fee: 0-30 quid. So roughly 200-500 to get started, then 150-350 monthly for medicine. Several clinics have affordability schemes (Sapphire Access Scheme, for example). Compare that to what you're spending on the street — for many people it works out similar, but you get lab-tested, legal medicine delivered to your door.

What about edibles — can I get those on prescription?+

UK prescriptions currently focus on dried flower (for vaporization) and cannabis oils (sublingual drops). You won't get gummy bears on the NHS just yet! Cannabis oils are great for precise dosing and longer-lasting effects — many patients use flower during the day and oil at night. Some clinics prescribe both. The UK market is expanding, and more formulations are becoming available. If edibles are your preference, ask your prescriber about oil-based options.
